Social Security
Edith U. Fierst tells us that “African Americans have many reasons to oppose privatization” of Social Security (Commentary, Jan. 14). Fierst argues well but misses the point.
Social Security is one of a package of welfare-state programs that promote dependency and keep African Americans firmly locked on the “liberal plantation.” Taken together, these programs drain the spirit and initiative of those who “benefit” from them. They discourage risk-taking and the assumption of personal responsibility for one’s own future, and for investing for that future.
Privatization would restore incentives, encourage initiative and promote self-reliance. It would take blacks out of the pocket of liberal and statist interests and actually enhance their political clout with both right and left.
