On June 23 the Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved the Silk Road Strategy Act (S 1344), which would effectively lift the ban on U.S. aid to the government of Azerbaijan. As an Armenian American, I am very disappointed by this action, because this bill represents a fundamentally misguided effort by the Caspian oil lobby to reward Azerbaijan for refusing to lift its illegal blockades to Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh or to hold direct peace talks with Nagorno-Karabakh.

There is a need to educate members of both houses of Congress about the dangers of advancing Azerbaijan’s narrow interests at the expense of our national security interest in bringing lasting peace and prosperity to this critically important region.
