Smoking Bill

Share

Back in Pennsylvania my advertising agency handled many political campaigns. Some of our clients, like Tom Ridge, Pennsylvania’s current governor, were politically smarter than others.

But I can’t think of one that would have pulled a boneheaded move like replacing an entire bill (about horse racing) with another (about smoking in bars) under the same bill number and calling it an amendment (“GOP Revives Effort to Kill Ban on Smoking in Bars,” June 25).

Given the public’s attitude about political subterfuge and tobacco companies, given that polls show the smoking ban to be very popular, given that the bills didn’t have a prayer of passing anyway, what could Sens. William “Pete” Knight and Ross Johnson be thinking?
