Fires in Cyprus Force Evacuations
Forest fires raged across the Mediterranean island of Cyprus on Sunday, while firefighters in Greece and Italy controlled most of the blazes that have destroyed thousands of acres of forest.
In Cyprus, where 5,000 acres of forest were burning, residents of three villages were evacuated in the Turkish-occupied northern third of the island, according to the Turkish Cypriot news agency TAK.
In Greece, firefighters reined in most of the 180 fires that swept across the country Saturday. Less than 10 were still burning out of control, including one forest fire on Mt. Parnis, north of Athens.
One woman died on the island of Salamis, west of Athens, while trying to escape her burning home.
In Italy, cooler temperatures eased the threat from fires in the southern regions of Calabria and Puglia and in Sicily.
