Speedway Expands Program for Fair

Speedway features an expanded racing schedule this weekend, coinciding with the opening of the Orange County Fair.

Tonight, fans of the speedway support races will see championship events for Sidecars, Midgets, pro 1600 dirt bikes and the four-wheel quads. The highlight of the weekend is Saturday’s Speedway Fair Derby, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Riders will try to displace defending champion Shawn McConnell of Brea.

The kids take over the oval on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the Motorized Olympics. Though older kids (and even adults) will participate, the card is built around children 6-12 riding 50, 60 and 80 cc mini-cycles on the speedway track and on a course built inside the oval.

Sunday’s “Sound of Thunder” at 6 p.m. features competition between restored vintage motorcycles--including Triumph, Indian and Ariel brands--in 11 classes, ranging from pre-1940 to the 1970s.

The events are free with $6 admission to the fair.
