The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded $611,000 in grants for educational workshops that will benefit Orange and surrounding counties, officials announced Friday.

The grants will go to nonprofit conservation projects and educational efforts in Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, said Gail Chun of the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service.

The groups and projects, Chun said, include the South Coast Resource Conservation and Development, which will receive $25,000 to do educational workshops on South Coast ecosystem enhancement. The Milk Producers Council will receive $20,000 for education projects, including dairy waste water control, storm water control and runoff, and dairy solid waste handling and removal.

About 10% of the money will be spent on education, with the rest going to farm conservation projects.
