Grant Will Fund Ground Water Project

Share

The Orange County Water District and the Orange County Sanitation District will share a $716,000 grant for a new project to replenish the county’s ground water reserves.

The Groundwater Replenishment System project will produce about 100,000 acre-feet (about 325,000 gallons) of new water a year for the north Orange County ground water basin.

According to officials, the project will use highly treated waste water, purified beyond drinking water standards, then percolated into the ground water basin by natural purification and stored in the aquifers for later use.

The money is part of $2.8 million in funds distributed statewide by the California Energy Commission.
