* Actress JoAnne Worley was one of more than 1,100 guests attending the Petersen Automotive Museum’s “Cars & Stars Gala” on June 19 at the museum. More than $200,000 was raised at the event that featured cars and celebrities, including actors Robert Stack, Donald O’Connor, Loni Anderson, Lyle Waggoner, James Garner, Barbi Benton and Ernest Borgnine. Auto racing champions Phil Hill and Carroll Shelby also attended. On the auction block were a 1999 Chrysler 300M sports sedan, a 1998 Mercedes-Benz ML320, a 1952 Mercedes 220 cabriolet and a 1957 Continental Mark II. Proceeds went to the museum and its May Family Children’s Discovery Center.

* Nearly $180,000 was raised at the H.E.L.P. Group’s 21st annual “Friends Forever” luncheon June 10 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. More than 700 guests were entertained by children performing song-and-dance routines, accompanied by Dyan Cannon, Mac Davis, Ilene Graff, Dawnn Lewis and Louis Price. Angela Lansbury was the special guest host, with USA Networks chairman Barry Diller as honorary chair. Quincy Jones, Margaret Loesch, Greg Meidel, Lucie Salhany, Sonia and David Salzman and Steve and Jamie Tisch were luncheon chairs. Ken Solomon, president of Studio USA Television, and actress Katey Sagal received 1998 H.E.L.P. Humanitarian Awards. American Express was given the group’s Corporate Philanthropy Award. The H.E.L.P. Group (Housing, Education, Learning, Psychology) serves young people and families with special needs related to social and emotional development, abuse and neglect, mental retardation, autism and learning disabilities.
