Sturdy Settee Is Sure to Please

Share

Here’s a classic piece of outdoor furniture that goes beautifully with a breezy summer afternoon, a cold drink and a good book. This sturdy glider settee seats two to three adults, features an adjustable sunshade and, with its gentle back-and-forth motion, will probably be a favorite for many summers to come.

The glider is a good project for both amateur and experienced do-it-yourselfers. It is built from one 4-by-8 sheet of exterior fir plywood along with one 2-by-4 and 23 1-by-2s of fir lumber. The sunshade shown here is made from canvas sailcloth and cotton fringe, but it can be made from a variety of materials in a number of styles. Other materials for the project include carriage bolts, wood screws, nails, water pipe, glue, sandpaper and paint.

The project has three main pieces: base, bench and sunshade. After the parts are cut (many are traced from full-size patterns), the base is assembled. Then the bench is built from plywood and slats and suspended from the base with bolts and bushings made from water pipe. After the sunshade support is bolted on, the shade is cut from canvas and stapled to the frame.

The completed glider measures 51 inches long by 28 inches deep by 65 inches tall.

The glider settee plan, No. 369, includes full-size traceable patterns, step-by-step assembly instructions with photos, diagrams and a complete shopping list.
