The Times’ July 22 editorial about Nigeria not only erroneously referred to Lagos as the capital, but was addressed to a very naive readership. In a country where 80% of the government’s revenue comes from three or four transnational oil companies, it’s plain that the dictator is an employee, not the boss. Whether Nigerians are allowed a degree of democracy will be decided in the boardrooms of Shell and Mobil, not in Abuja, the new capital.

The public silence about this fact by our government and media shows the power of such corporations.
