Commission Considers Proposed Dog Park

The Recreation and Parks Commission may establish the city’s first off-leash dog park.

Mayor Mike Gordon proposed such a park after a visit to a second-grade class at Center Street Elementary School. One youngster recalled getting in trouble for letting a dog run loose on the playground after school. The children “wanted to know where they could go to let their dogs run free,” Gordon said.

When Gordon brought up the matter in a quarterly newsletter he publishes, more than 100 people wrote back to say they would welcome a dog park in the community, he said.

The City Council directed the Recreation and Parks Commission to look into the issue last week; the commission’s report is expected within 60 days, he said.
