Shelter’s Volunteers to Be Recognized
The L.A. Family Housing Corp. will honor individuals, families and organizations tonight that have volunteered at the Trudy and Norman Louis Valley Shelter.
“The volunteers . . . really deserve the credit for providing the level of quality and service we give to our homeless clients,” said Nat Hutton, executive director of the Housing Corp., which runs Valley Shelter.
More than 30 individuals, San Fernando Valley schools, churches, temples and other community-service groups will receive awards in appreciation of their work at the 6:30 p.m. reception at the shelter, 7843 Lankershim Blvd..
Among the honorees will be St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church in Chatsworth, which has supplied milk to the shelter every month for the past 10 years, and Blossom Kerman, 70, who helps serve breakfast every weekday morning, said Tracy Wallace, director of development for the Housing Corp.
Other award recipients include the Oakwood Secondary School in North Hollywood, Los Encinos School and the Temple Ramat Zion in Northridge.
Those honored will also get a chance to tour the new Sydney M. Irmas Transitional Living Center. Located two doors south of the Valley Shelter, the Living Center is to open in the fall with 68 units for homeless families, a kitchen, community computer and job-resource center, Wallace said.
L.A. Family Housing Corp., a private nonprofit organization, was founded in 1983. According to Wallace, the agency served more than 11,200 homeless and low-income individuals and families last year at 19 service sites in the Valley and elsewhere in Los Angeles.
