The condition of a female deputy who was stabbed in a courtroom by a defendant who was killed by another deputy continued to improve Tuesday, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

“She is alert and talking with doctors and family,” said Deputy Boris Nikolof. “And she’s expected to remain hospitalized for several days.”

The injured deputy, whose name was withheld, was stabbed as she struggled with James Eugene Moore moments after Moore was convicted on a sexual kidnapping charge.

Upon hearing the verdict, Moore used an 8-inch shank to stab the female bailiff and a male colleague before being shot to death by a third deputy as stunned jurors watched.

Moore had been free on his own recognizance during his Compton Superior Court trial.

The male deputy, who was stabbed in the neck, was briefly hospitalized and released Monday.
