Street Work

“Dispute Puts Los Angeles Street Striping in the Slow Lane” (June 1) reports that recently there have been delays in getting streets restriped after resurfacing due to a dispute between the city and one of its contractors. My experience is that there have been lengthy delays between resurfacing and restriping (and other completion matters) for many years.

Several major street resurfacing projects in my area, including Melrose Avenue between Fairfax and Orlando and La Brea between Waring and Beverly, saw many, many months between the initial work and completion. These include weeks between the removal of the old surface and the installation of the new surface, more months before the various holes for utility access are brought up to the new street level and then more months before final striping is done. Not weeks. Months.

The city can issue a mea culpa on contract problems for the recent projects, but just what has been going on for the last four years?
