Border Dispute With Ethiopia Escalates
Officials here and in Ethiopia accused each other of attacks, dimming hopes for a peaceful solution to their border dispute. Witnesses said two villages near the border town of Zalambessa were shelled by Ethiopian forces. Troops on both sides also waged battles with heavy artillery, mortars and small arms. Last month, Ethiopia accused its neighbor of illegally occupying 160 square miles of its territory, a charge Eritrea denies.
