‘Prospectors’ Tap Rich Vein of History
A group of home-schooled students re-created a piece of the Gold Rush on Thursday at Thousand Oaks Community Park.
The children, ranging in age from 5 to 13, panned for gold, wrote letters with quill pens and washed clothes by hand.
The living history presentation was put on by Camino Real Naturalists and Interpreters, a local company that re-creates moments in history for school groups. “History comes alive for kids when they’re actually doing things that people used to do,” said company owner Karen Kennedy. “It makes kids excited about history.”
Kennedy’s other programs include Thomas Edison’s inventions, the natural world of the Chumash Indians and life in California’s missions.
