City Backs Leasing Building for Police

The City Council has approved a lease that would allow sheriff’s personnel, who serve under contract as Moorpark’s police force, to work out of a 3,500-square-foot building owned by the city’s school district.

The building is in the south wing of the Moorpark Unified School District administration complex. Moorpark’s police force currently operates out of the sheriff’s east county station in Thousand Oaks.

The lease on the school property would run for five years and could be extended three years.

The rent would be free during the first year, but it would cost the city $16,800 annually beginning in July 1999 and increase by $4,800 per year to $31,200 by the year 2002. Also beginning next July, the city would be required to pay the district $4,000 annually for utilities.

The lease, approved earlier this week, calls for police to have use of 14 parking spaces during business hours and five spaces during nonbusiness hours.
