Premier Resigns; Successor Named

Prime Minister Alberto Pandolfi--one of President Alberto Fujimori’s closest allies--resigned unexpectedly, the government said. He was replaced by Javier Valle Riestra, 66, a former senator. Pandolfi, 57, who had been premier since 1996, had defended Fujimori’s often-controversial policies. In keeping with tradition, the other Cabinet ministers also resigned. They were later reappointed to their posts by Fujimori.
