A Project to Welcome Summer

Like crisp autumn days or the moment the sun breaks through after a winter rain, long summer evenings have a magic all their own. It’s a time for barbecues, pool parties and just plain relaxing with family and friends.

With life moving outdoors soon, it’s time to get the porch, patio or pool in shape for the warm weather. This elegant do-it-yourself planter-and-bench combination is the perfect place to start. Filled with plants and flowers, it will define a corner of the porch or patio with style.

Featuring all straight cuts and modular construction, this project allows do-it-yourselfers to decide what combination of planter boxes and connecting benches works best for their own space. Materials lists are included for individual boxes and benches, as well as for the ombination pictured.

The planter bench is built from redwood for its beauty, strength and durability, although other woods can be substituted if properly treated. The finished planter boxes measure about 20 1/2 inches square by 17 inches tall, and the benches measure 36 inches long by 15 inches wide.
