Proud as we are of all Medal of Honor awardees, including Marine Pfc. Eugene A. Obregon, Roberto N. Galvan’s statement (letter, May 31) that Hispanic Americans have earned more medals of honor, 41, than any other ethnic group is incorrect. What is correct is Hispanic Americans earned more medals of honor during World War II than any other ethnic group.

African Americans earned more medals of honor than any other ethnic group, 77; 16 in the Civil War, 17 on the western frontier, eight at sea between the Civil and Spanish-American wars, six in the Spanish-American War, one in World War I, seven in World War II, two in the Korean War and 20 in the Vietnam War.

An Asian American infantry battalion was the most decorated unit in World War II.
