High-Tech Jobs

“Loosen Quotas for High-Tech Immigrants” (Commentary, June 2) contained inaccuracies. The Workforce Improvement and Protection Act will increase the number of skilled workers from overseas and do so in a way that protects American workers from being displaced by foreign workers.

The legislation provides two common sense safeguards for working men and women. One asks companies to recruit American workers before hiring from overseas. The second protects them from being fired and replaced by foreign workers.

What is wrong with asking companies, for example, to place ads in newspapers for job openings before they hire from abroad? If a qualified American worker is available, he or she should get the job.
