Jerry Neil Capehart; Co-Writer of Rock Classic ‘Summertime Blues’

Jerry Neil Capehart, 69, songwriter and manager who co-wrote the rock ‘n’ roll classic “Summertime Blues.” Written with Eddie Cochran and recorded by Cochran in 1958, the song became a timeless teenage anthem with its line, “I called my congressman and he said, quote, ‘I’d like to help you, son, but you’re too young to vote.’ ” The song was popularized anew by Blue Cheer in 1968, The Who in 1970 and Alan Jackson in 1994. Capehart earned his first hit in 1951 with “Beautiful Brown Eyes,” recorded by Rosemary Clooney and later Jimmy Wakely. He also wrote “Turn Around, Look At Me,” recorded by Glen Campbell in 1961 and The Vogues in 1968. On Sunday in Nashville, Tenn., of brain cancer.

Sherman Labby; Movie Illustrator and Storyboard Artist

Sherman Labby, 68, an artist whose 60 motion pictures ranged from “The Invasion of the Body Snatchers” to “The Horse Whisperer.” Born in Hollywood, Labby studied art at the Art Center Institute of Los Angeles. He worked in advertising in San Francisco and live television in New York before returning permanently to his hometown. As illustrator and storyboard artist, Labby shaped the look of several well-known films, including Robert Redford’s “Horse Whisperer,” now in theaters. Others included “Xanadu,” “The Incredible Shrinking Woman,” “The Money Pit,” “Broadcast News,” “Black Rain,” “Sea of Love,” “The War of the Roses,” “Thelma and Louise,” “Free Willy,” “Congo” and “Alaska.” On May 31 in Los Angeles.

Littlejohn L. McCarey; Broadway Actor and AIDS Activist

Littlejohn “L.J.” Lindler McCarey, 44, a Broadway actor in such musicals as “Hair” and a California AIDS activist. Born in Miami Beach, McCarey performed in “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Godspell,” “Inner City,” “Dude” and “The Rainbow” before becoming a personal manager.
