Queen of Angels Hospital Sale Finalized

The controversial sale of Queen of Angels Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center to Tenet Healthcare Corp., the nation’s second-largest for-profit hospital chain, became final Friday, Tenet officials said.

“We’re delighted,” said Tenet spokesman Harry Anderson. “We think we offer considerable strengths that will ensure a healthy future for the hospital and the community it serves.”

Queen of Angels joins Tenet’s 32-member Southern California network. Proceeds of more than $100 million from the transaction will be transferred to an independent charitable foundation serving health needs in the greater Hollywood area.

The sale, approved by California Atty. Gen. Dan Lungren, had been strongly opposed by Cardinal Roger M. Mahony, hospital union officials and consumer advocates who feared the for-profit owner would not honor Queen’s long-standing charitable mission.
