Alarcon-Katz Campaign

Share

It really saddens me that Richard Alarcon may have won nomination for state Senate by dealing for himself and playing a hand of so-called race cards. In the final few days before the election, he:

* Saturated the predominantly Latino northeast Valley neighborhood with illegally posted signs on telephone poles and public property.

* Accepted [nearly] $200,000 from the East L.A. political machine members from whose recurrent personal problems he has tried to disassociate himself.

* Permitted mailings that blatantly lied in implying that his opponent would seek to intimidate Latino voters at the polls.

* Used an unwilling Cardinal Mahony to enhance his own image and influence a possible “Catholic vote.”

No wonder he didn’t sign the pledge of good ethics [Richard] Katz proposed at the start of the campaign!

I am sick of race being used unfairly just to win something you feel can’t be won fairly. They have turned this into an “us-versus-them” situation and for that reason I say, “Shame on you, Richard Alarcon.”

Re “Sign of the Times,” Political Briefing, June 5.

Now that the election is over, let us hope that our fearless defender of law and order and staunch supporter of family values, Councilman Alarcon, will make our Valley beautiful again by cleaning up the ugly signs that he has illegally posted throughout the area. Who should know better than he that there is an ordinance against posting signs on telephone poles and public places.
