Asebestos Update
In the “Ask the Inspector” column of June 7, part of the answer to the question about asbestos (“Detecting Asbestos in Ceiling Is Specialist’s Job”) was in error.
Since 1992, California has required that asbestos inspections, typically referred to as surveys in the industry, be performed by a California certified asbestos consultant or by a California certified site surveillance technician working under the supervision of a certified asbestos consultant.
In California, a home inspector who has taken only a training class in asbestos removal may not legally conduct such a survey, even of a ceiling in a house.
