Millionaire Plans to Run for President

Kirsan N. Ilyumzhinov, millionaire president of the republic of Kalmykia and head of the International Chess Federation, said he will run for Russia’s presidency in 2000. Ilyumzhinov, 36, becomes the third politician to openly express presidential ambitions. Former Prime Minister Viktor S. Chernomyrdin and liberal Grigory A. Yavlinsky also have said they will run. Ilyumzhinov said he will either form his own party “relying on the regions and young people” or align himself with an existing party, such as the Communists or the Agrarians.
