Council OKs Final Step in Leaf-Blower Ban

Share

The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday approved the final step in its controversial ban on gasoline-powered leaf blowers.

Acting unanimously with 12 members present, the council agreed to allow street maintenance staff members and building and safety inspectors to issue citations against gardeners who use the noisy blowers within 500 feet of residences.

The council approved the leaf blower ban last December; it became effective in February. Violations of the law carry a $270 fine.

Under the council’s action Tuesday, which still must be approved by the mayor, street maintenance staff will have a large share of the enforcement responsibility. Currently, only police officers can issue citations. The street maintenance inspectors will respond to complaints made in writing and by phone on the leaf blower hotline: (800) 996-2489.
