Mahony Doing ‘Very Well’ After Prostate Surgery

Cardinal Roger M. Mahony’s recovery was “going very well” Tuesday, a day after surgery for removal of a cancerous prostate gland, his surgeon said.

Dr. Donald G. Skinner, who performed a radical prostatectomy on Mahony at the USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and Hospital, said Mahony spent a restless but comfortable night.

Skinner said the head of the Catholic archdiocese of Los Angeles started on fluids early in the day, and would be on a regular diet by evening.

Msgr. Kevin Kostelnik, Mahony’s secretary, said the religious leader’s first words were, “Thank you,” after being told by Skinner that the surgery was successful.

“Throughout the day, Cardinal Mahony kept repeating, ‘Thank you, Lord, for the gift,’ ” Kostelnik said. “When I asked him what the gift was, he told me, ‘The gift of early diagnosis and the successful surgery.’ ”
