I keep thinking that the article, “Man Who Removed Signs Accused of Theft,” (June 12) is a figment of someone’s imagination. Unfortunately, it’s probably true that the city attorney has actually charged a man with theft who sought to clean up his neighborhood by removing illegally posted signs.

The absurdity of the action needs to be looked at in the context of the quantity of illegal signs that proliferate. Garage sale signs that never come down, directions to movie shoots as well campaign signs for one candidate for the state Senate on virtually every freeway off-ramp contribute to this blight.

I still don’t think I got this right: The city attorney will prosecute a man for removing a few of these signs, but not those who post them. I guess the next step could be to prosecute people for removing graffiti.
