Wetlands Needed, Not Golf Courses
* The California Coastal Commission was correct in delaying approval of the Hellman development project because the plan is in violation of the Coastal Act’s mandate to save coastal wetlands (June 11).
Newly appointed commissioner Shirley S. Dettloff rightly questioned whether the construction of a golf course on wetlands could be justified under the law.
Besides threatening coastal wetlands, the plan would destroy a colony of western burrowing owls, a Belding savannah sparrow habitat and remove the last remaining habitat of the Caltier’s goldfields, a plant once thought extinct but located on the site.
Orange County has enough golf courses and luxury homes, but our wetlands and endangered species are vanishing at an alarming rate.
