From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Crews battled wildfires in drought-stricken counties of north and central Florida, with little help in sight from nature. Blazes in at least 19 counties burned under scorching Florida sunshine that has given rise to 100-degree temperatures and desert-like drought. More than 80 fires had started in the past 24 hours, mostly by lightning, and 80 to 90 new fires were expected daily unless Florida received some rainfall, officials said.
