It had probably never even entered the mind of Berti Vogts, Germany’s coach, that Sunday was the 20th anniversary of a humiliating 3-2 loss to Austria.

But a reporter brought it up anyway.

The match was significant to Vogts because he scored an own-goal in the game, in his 96th and final appearance for Germany.

“I’ll observe a minute’s silence,” Vogts joked when reminded of the incident.
