Irvine, Santa Ana Scores Are Released

Share

Nearly all test scores from Orange County’s 27 school districts have been publicly released, the latest data coming from a few major school systems such as Irvine Unified and Santa Ana Unified.

In Santa Ana Unified, the largest local district with about 51,000 students, marks were often 20 to 30 points below the national percentile averages.

For example, the highest district reading average was at the eighth grade, where students ranked at the 25th percentile.

Administrators attribute the low scores to the large number of students, 71%, who are not fluent in English.

When scores are separated by language abilities, students who speak English only generally scored near the national average of the 50th percentile.

Fourth graders who speak only English ranked at the 48th percentile in reading.

Their limited-English peers, who represent 61% of the fourth-grade test takers, ranked at the 13th percentile in reading, lowering the total reading average to the 19th percentile.

Santa Ana Unified officials said this year’s scores on the Stanford 9 showed similar patterns to results from a different standardized exam, the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills (CTBS), given last year.

Irvine Unified also had used the CTBS in previous years, but the district’s testing coordinator Beverly Huff said that test is significantly different from the state’s newly adopted Stanford 9 exam.

Any comparisons between the two tests would be invalid, Huff said.

“We need to treat these results as exactly what they are, first-year data,” she said.

The school district’s students generally ranked above the 70th percentile.

Grading the Schools

Two more Orange County school districts released scores in the state’s new standardized test of basic skills, the Stanford 9. The test was given to students in grades two to 11 from mid-March to mid-May.

Editor’s note: The percentile figures show how student scores ranked, on average, against a nationally selected group. Elementary and middle school students were tested in spelling, reading, language and math. High school students were tested in reading, language, math, science and social studies. Those at the 50th percentile scored higher than one half of the pool and lower than the other half. “LEP” designates students who are limited English proficient. Below are 1998 scores expressed as national percentile rankings.
