Shopping Center to Pay $9.25 Million to Clerk
A store clerk who was beaten and severely brain-damaged during a robbery received a $9.25-million settlement from the shopping center where the attack took place.
Jill Marker, 38, contended security at Silas Creek Crossing was lax on the night in 1995 when she was struck in the head more than 20 times at Silk Plant Forest.
Marker is paralyzed below the waist and unable to speak more than a few words. She breathes through a hole in her throat and is fed through a tube in her stomach.
Michael Smith was convicted of the attack and sentenced to up to 28 years in prison.
The settlement, announced Thursday, will enable her to leave a nursing home and live with her parents.
