Storms packing damaging winds and heavy rains thundered across Iowa and Indiana on Monday, snapping power lines and trees, shattering windows, blowing tractor-trailers off highways and derailing a train.

There were no immediate reports of serious injuries.

The storms sparked tornado warnings across the middle third of Iowa. The National Weather Service confirmed tornadoes in Dallas County near DeSoto and Granger, in Crawford County near Dallas City and Buckgrove and about 3 miles south of Norwalk in Warren County.

The tornado in Granger, a town of 620 about 20 miles northwest of Des Moines, leveled a duplex and severely damaged about six houses, said Brian Gilbert, a Dallas County sheriff’s deputy.

Strong winds blew several empty trailers of an Iowa Interstate Railroad train off the tracks and at least one landed in the Iowa River in Iowa City. The train had stopped because of the tornado warning.
