Is it a bedcover or a work of art? A quilt can be both.

Beautifully decorated handmade quilts are considered prime examples of folk art.

The quilt dates back to prehistory. It consists of two layers of cloth filled with soft insulating material such as cotton, down or wool. The layers are fastened by tiny stitches that run in plain rows or in decorative designs.

The top layer may be decorated with geometric forms or pictures of animals, buildings, people or plants. Such intricate handwork can make the quilt a family heirloom or collector’s item worthy of display in a museum.
