Plan to Limit Number of Taxi Operators Proposed

In an attempt to decrease the number of cabs driving around the popular downtown area, the City Council has proposed an ordinance that requires taxi operators to obtain a permit to do business within city limits.

Under the proposed law, taxi operators must declare the number of cabs they intend to run in the city, show proof of insurance and vehicle safety inspection, and provide the names of drivers serving the city. The law also gives the city manager the right to reject a taxi operator’s application.

The City Council, which is scheduled to vote on the ordinance next Tuesday, is divided on the issue.

Councilwoman Julie Oakes said the law is an extra safety measure for the city and potential cab riders.

“It’s letting us know who is coming into the community and whether they can safely carry people from one place to another,” said Oakes.

Mayor Sam Edgerton said he is opposed to the proposed law because the taxis provide insurance against drunk driving.

“Having cabs decreases the number of drunk driving accidents immediately,” said Edgerton.
