U.S. to Pay $2.2 Billion to Clean Up Sections of Nuclear Test Site
The government will spend $2.2 billion over the next 16 years cleaning up sections of the Nevada Test Site, according to a revised Energy Department plan.
The work will be carried out on certain sections of the site, 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, where the nation conducted nuclear weapons tests from 1951 to 1992.
At the same time, the Energy Department will continue to ship low-level nuclear waste from department sites across the country for storage at the test site through 2070.
The Energy Department had forecast that it would have the cleanup project completed by 2006, but has pushed the date back to 2014.
