2 Protestant Militants Accused in N. Ireland Killings

BELFAST, Northern Ireland — Authorities charged two Protestant militants with murder Wednesday in connection with the sectarian killings of two best friends--one Catholic, one Protestant--in a village pub.
Ryan Robley, 28, and David Keys, 26, from the predominantly Protestant town of Banbridge, were charged with murdering Damien Trainor and Philip Allen on March 3 in a Catholic-owned pub in the village of Poyntzpass.
The attack in the religiously mixed village about 25 miles southwest of Belfast attracted attention because Trainor was a Catholic and Allen a Protestant. Many politicians cited their friendship as a model for Northern Ireland.
Robley and Keys were also charged with possessing the two weapons used in the attack and ammunition. Neither spoke during the hearing. They told police they were innocent of the charges.
