A man suspected of taking part in the murder of a Catholic and Protestant who were friends in this British province has been found hanged in prison, the government said Sunday.

The Northern Ireland Office said David Keys, 26, was found in his cell in the Maze prison Sunday morning.

He was one of four men charged in the March 3 double murder carried out by gunmen who burst into a bar in the quiet village of Poyntzpass and killed Philip Allen, a Protestant, and Damien Trainor, a Roman Catholic.

The victims were lifelong friends despite the sectarian divisions that scar Northern Ireland.

The attack was widely blamed on the Protestant Loyalist Volunteer Force.
