TOBACCO
Cigarette advertising spending rose to $5.1 billion in 1996, the year before tobacco companies entered landmark negotiations to resolve dozens of state lawsuits, the Federal Trade Commission said in an annual report to Congress. The sum is 4% over that of the previous year. Tobacco companies have agreed as part of last year’s proposed $368.5-billion settlement to abandon a host of advertising and marketing approaches.
