Fixing Pool Would Top $650,000, Report Says

Readying the Los Alamitos Armed Forces Reserve Center’s swimming pool for community use would cost more than $650,000, according to a municipal report.

Though no formal agreement is in place, the cost would likely be split among other cities and the county.

To offset some of the operational expenses, swimming classes and team activities could fetch about $44,000 a year.

Officials say the pool needs work: Repairing gas lines and pool heaters would cost $43,600; replacing the filtration system and perimeter lighting would cost $198,000; and adding restrooms, showers, a parking lot and fencing would cost $425,000.

A proposed diving pool, which is not needed to reopen the center, would cost about $1.2 million.

The U.S. water polo team, while training for the 1996 Olympics, was the last group to use the 50-meter pool with any regularity.

The team has proposed using the pool again to train for the 2000 Games.
