Westerners Spied for East, Agency Says

Between 20,000 and 30,000 West Germans helped East Germany’s secret police over the decades, a government agency said. The secret police, known as the Stasi, not only undertook military and industrial espionage against the West but also invested enormous energy in securing spies to influence West German public opinion and decision-making, according to clergyman Joachim Gauck, who is leading the agency’s investigation into the Stasi files that became available after East and West Germany’s reunification in 1990.
