Protesters Clash With Police; 49 Are Hurt
From Times Wire Reports
Security forces clashed with about 1,000 students who tried to stage an illegal march in Solo, east of Jakarta, the capital, witnesses said. At least 10 officers and 39 protesters were hurt. Students have been protesting a lack of democracy and President Suharto’s failure to reverse a devastating currency plunge. Meanwhile, the U.S. said it would send $56 million in food and medical aid. Suharto’s government is still renegotiating a $43-billion international loan package that has been suspended.
