Hutu rebels killed five high school students during attacks on two schools in northwestern Rwanda, where Hutu violence is increasing, a local official said Thursday.

One of the attacks occurred Wednesday while President Clinton was in the capital, Kigali, promising to help Rwandans bring stability to their country, recovering from a 1994 genocide.

The attacks were on schools in neighboring villages in a Hutu rebel stronghold about 55 miles northwest of Kigali.

Most of the rebels took part in the 1994 slaughter in Rwanda of about 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus. Tutsis took power and stopped those killings, but thousands more Rwandans have died in rebel attacks and in reprisals by the Tutsi-led army since then.
