City to Decide on Grant Distributions

Share

The City Council will decide Monday which of the more than three dozen organizations that applied for Community Development Block Grants will receive funding.

Since December, Simi Valley has received 41 applications from groups and city departments anxious for a piece of the $1 million in funds available to the city this year.

Administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, block grants are allocated annually to cities with populations of 50,000 or more to help support and establish everything from social services networks to health-care programs to road repairs.

The city received $804,000 in grant money from the federal government this year. That money will be added to the $206,048 in grant funds that went unused last year.

Some of the groups that have applied for funding include the Simi Valley Council on Aging, Teens at Risk program, Kid Gloves Boxing Foundation, Wellness Community and the city’s Department of Public Works.

Council members will make their decisions based on a number of criteria, including cost-benefit ratios, amount of matching funds committed to the project and the overall benefit to the community.

The council meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 2929 Tapo Canyon Road.
