Oak View to Celebrate Its Cleanup

Share

After years of fighting gangs, drugs, and graffiti, residents of the Oak View neighborhood this weekend plan to celebrate their efforts at cleaning up the area.

At Saturday’s fifth annual Oak View Community Pride Day, residents and city officials will clean up trash and paint over graffiti. Afterward, there will be awards, food and music, said organizer Peggy Flanagan.

“Things are really looking better,” said Flanagan, a code enforcement officer. “People now care about their neighborhood and are taking care of their community. We had the promise of many young people of the area not to paint graffiti and they have honored that promise.”

In past years, the Oak View neighborhood was described as a hotbed of gang and drug activity. But through efforts of the Oak View Task Force, the city and residents, crime, blight and other problems have decreased.

The celebration begins 8 a.m. and runs through noon at the Oak View Community Center, 17261 Oak Lane. Information: (714) 536-5552.
