El Concilio del Condado de Ventura has kicked off its annual fund-raising drive by announcing a $10,000 donation from GTE.

The nonprofit Latino-advocacy organization will use the money to help fund one of its showcase events, the upcoming Breakthrough Youth for Success Intensive Retreat.

“We have a long tradition of providing assistance to the organization, and we’re proud to provide this contribution,” said John Dokken, GTE public affairs director. The GTE donation provides half of the $20,000 that the Oxnard-based organization needs for the event.

Now in its third year, the retreat brings 50 at-risk youths together for four days of counseling and training. The program is designed to help teenagers succeed in school and take more responsibility.

Participants, ages 13 to 18, will meet weekly with adult mentors for a year after the retreat.

El Concilio is seeking more donations and volunteers for the retreat, which will begin July 27. Call 486-9777 for more information.
