Days after he replaced the suspended police chief, William Bacon was also suspended after admitting having ties to a former policeman convicted in an marijuana growing operation linked to organized crime.

Bacon, head of the police department’s internal investigation unit before he was made acting chief last weekend, agreed to go on unpaid leave Thursday while the town investigates his ties to Richard Lantini, a Stone Park officer convicted in 1994 on drug and racketeering charges.

“The allegation is that I’m all mobbed up and I have organized-crime ties,” said Bacon, who denied the charges.

Last week, officials suspended Bacon’s predecessor, David Niebur, and Deputy Superintendent Philip T. Bue for allegedly refusing to cooperate with a town investigation of a towing contract.
