The State Department on Saturday warned U.S. citizens to avoid travel to Algeria.

“Terrorists have attacked ports, trains and airports,” the department said in a statement. “The level of risk for foreigners is extremely high.”

Americans who choose to travel there are advised to take precautions, including avoiding regularly scheduled commercial flights, being met or accompanied by armed guards at airports and having armed protection.

At least 75,000 people have died since the start of the Islamic insurgency that erupted after the military stepped in to cancel January 1992 parliamentary elections that a radical Islamist party appeared set to win.

International efforts to persuade Algerian authorities to allow an independent inquiry into the violence have failed.
